As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best tantan
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport tantan
But there are no Blacks in your sport tantan
“They’re going to want to kill you tantan
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on tantan
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car tantan
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events tantan
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all tantan
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself tantan
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed tantan
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride tantan
“But I enjoyed it tantan
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun tantan
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me tantan
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating tantan
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs tantan
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality tantan
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 tantan
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” tantan
But to this interview, he’s late tantan
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems tantan
It was the racing way or the highway tantan
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas tantan
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill tantan
That’s all that was discussed in the family tantan
We didn’t discuss any other sport tantan
“I was lucky, I think tantan
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be tantan
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did tantan
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One tantan
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s tantan
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too tantan
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril tantan
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer tantan
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time tantan
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says tantan
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team tantan
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders tantan
“Sure tantan
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done tantan
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it tantan
But for me? It was about going fast tantan
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali tantan
“What I admired about him the most was not his tantan boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali tantan
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled tantan
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while tantan
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about tantan
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs tantan
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience tantan
The attention went off the chart tantan
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods tantan
“He’s a very kind man tantan
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way tantan
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair tantan
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with tantan
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently tantan
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world tantan
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made tantan
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says tantan
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One tantan
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ tantan

Rotherham’s Championship game with Ipswich on Friday has been postponed due to Storm Batantan bet tantan
The area has been hit with torrential rain over the last 24 hours and the River Don, which runs behind the AESSEAL New York Stadium has burst its banks tantan
That has left areas around the stadium flooded and after discussions with the Safety Advisory Group and the English tantan Football League, the game has been called off tantan
There was no problem with the pitch at the stadium, with the game due to have been shown on Sky tantan Sports tantan
A club statement read: “Rotherham United’s Sky tantan Bet Championship fixture against Ipswich Town has been postponed on the grounds of supporter safety following discussions with representatives from the Safety Advisory Group and the EFL which took place shortly after 4:30pm on Friday tantan
“After the River Don – which courses around the perimeter of AESSEAL New York Stadium – burst its banks, urgent discussions tantan between representatives from the Safety Advisory Group/Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and club safety personnel and the EFL – were held with the conclusion deeming the weather conditions and their subsequent effect on the surrounding area a danger to supporters tantan
“This coupled with continued rainfall resulting in the flood waters rising and Don Street being closed to the public left the authorities with no choice but to postpone the game tantan
“Throughout the day the pitch at AESSEAL New York Stadium has remained playable but with the safety of everyone attending the match at the height of our priorities, the difficult decision to postpone the fixture has been taken tantan
“The decision was relayed to the EFL and our counterparts at Ipswich Town with all parties in agreement that postponing the fixture was the only possible way to ensure the safety of players, staff and supporters tantan
“It goes without saying that we are obviously disappointed for supporters due to attend and those set to watch at home given the game was being broadcast live on Sky tantan Sports tantan
”Two cinch Premiership matches are among six Scottish league games which have been postponed amid severe weather warnings tantan
Aberdeen’s home match against Dundee and Motherwell’s trip to face St Johnstone have fallen foul of the storm tantan
The news came after a second person died in Angus as a result of the storm, which has brought floods and high winds, and after warnings of a risk to life were extended to all day Saturday as more heavy rain is forecast tantan
The Championship game tantan between Arbroath and Raith Rovers, in the worst-hit area of Angus, has been called off as has Greenock’s match against Inverness tantan
Cove Rangers against Montrose has been postponed along with two games in League 2 – Elgin versus Forfar and Stenhousemuir against Peterhead tantan
The games all involve teams in the north east of the country and Perth and were all due to take place on Saturday tantan
The Scottish Professional tantan Football League called off the games on safety grounds following discussions with police, clubs and other authorities with people being advised not to travel in large areas of the country tantan
SPFL chief operating officer Calum Beattie said: “We have been in close contact with Police Scotland and our clubs and it’s clear that we continue to face very severe weather, particularly in the north east, in the coming days tantan
“We never postpone any matches lightly, but our discussions with the emergency services left us in no doubt that this was the correct decision tantan
”The SPFL added that it would continue to monitor the situation involving the remaining fixtures across the country tantan
St Johnstone had told supporters their game was going ahead as it stood less than three hours before the wider decision was taken tantan
A club statement early on Friday afternoon said: “Whilst heavy rain has affected the local area, our dedicated ground staff and officials have been working tirelessly to ensure the pitch is in optimal condition, and we’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both players and spectators tantan
”Altrincham’s home game against Dorking in the Vanarama National League on Saturday has also been postponed tantan
Friday’s jumps fixtures at Fakenham and Uttoxeter were called off as Storm Batantan bet continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds across the country tantan
Both tracks had called inspections for 7 tantan
30am but neither venue held their respective cards due to the weather conditions tantan
Uttoxeter had 12mm of rain overnight, with clerk of the course Richard Fothergill anticipating a further 20mm at least over the day tantan
Saturday’s National Hunt card at Stratford has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track, with 31mm of rain overnight and more forecast, while Market Rasen have also called off their meeting tantan
Catterick, Newton Abbot and Leopardstown have all called precautionary morning checks to assess conditions tantan
