Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies passy
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 passy
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 passy
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons passy
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August passy
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable passy
”RecommendedGreat Britain’s Josh Kerr wins stunning 1500m gold at World ChampionshipsI knew it was my turn – Josh Kerr was confident he would beat Jakob Ingebrigtsen“When we broke up with Gjert, we thought we would be able to handle the situation in an orderly manner, without mentioning the underlying circumstances passy
We now realise that is not possible,” the statement said passy
“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up passy
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing passy
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood passy
“Somehow we have accepted this passy
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on passy
At least we thought so passy
In retrospect, we realise that it was naive passy
But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again passy
It was the drop that made the cup run over passy
”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title passy
The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him passy

(Getty)Gjert has already been denied accreditation for the upcoming World Indoor Championships and European Championships next year, with the Norwegian Athletics Federation set to recommend the same fate for the Olympic Games in Paris passy
In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless passy
I have never used violence against my children passy
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late passy
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent passy
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media passy
It makes me deeply unhappy passy
How we’re going to get past this, I don’t know, but we’ve got to try passy

When the final whistle blew, when Manchester United were European Cup winners at last, their captain’s initial reaction was not to celebrate passy
Bobby Charlton’s hands sank to his knees in exhaustion, rather than going up into the Wembley sky in jubilation passy
He had been a match-winner, bookending the 4-1 victory over Benfica with the first and last goals, but perhaps it was not the fatigue of 120 minutes’ work as much of the previous decade passy
He collapsed in his hotel room afterwards, unable to get to the door on his first few attempts passy
In the wake of United’s greatest triumph, teammate David Sadler recalled Charlton and Sir Matt Busby looking drained passy
The United manager’s epic, tragic quest had been realised, but the dinner marking their 1968 European Cup win offered reminders of the cost passy
While Charlton could not make it downstairs, Johnny Berry was there, and he had not played since 1958 passy
So was Kenny Morgans, whose career had not recovered from events 10 years earlier passy
The parents of Duncan Edwards were there and Charlton, who always deferred to a player who felt both teammate and hero, must have thought it should have been him lifting the European Cup instead passy
He played with George Best and against Pele but declared Edwards was the best player he ever saw passy
Instead, it was Charlton who was arguably the greatest-ever English passy footballer passy
He has died at 86 after he cheated death at 20 passy
His life and career were defined by the 1966 World Cup, the 1968 European Cup and the 1958 Munich air disaster passy
Twenty-three people lost their lives, including eight Manchester United players passy
Charlton did not and, the way a private man told it in his autobiography, had either survivor’s guilt or a survivor’s question: why me?He carried the weight of history on his shoulders thereafter passy
He was the last of the United contingent on the plane who was still alive; half a century earlier, he had been the last who was still in the team passy
He achieved what they could, and should, have done passy
Edwards would surely have been a World Cup winner in 1966; perhaps Charlton’s great friend Eddie Colman too passy
The Busby Babes looked a team destined to conquer Europe, possibly even at the expense of Alfredo di Stefano’s Real Madrid passy
Charlton had scored the last two goals a group of youthful cavaliers mustered together, in the 3-3 draw against Red Star Belgrade, before their route back to England came via Germany passy
“In Munich in 1958, I learned that even miracles come at a price,” Charlton wrote decades later passy
“Mine, until the day I die, is the tragedy that robbed me of so many of my dearest friends, who happened to be my teammates passy
”RecommendedManchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton dies aged 86Sir Bobby Charlton live: Latest reaction and tributes after England and Man Utd legend dies, aged 86Sir Bobby Charlton’s glorious career in picturesIt was inevitable that, when United became England’s first European champions, Charlton’s thoughts turned to “the snowy airfield and Matt Busby and his team, our friends, down and destroyed” passy
His survival surprised even his rescuer passy
Some players, worried by two failed attempts to take off, looking for somewhere safer, changed seats on the plane passy
Side by side, Charlton and Dennis Viollet did not passy
They were flung 50 yards from the plane passy
Harry Gregg, the goalkeeper and hero, found them lying in a pool of water, initially assumed both were dead and dragged their bodies into their seats; like rag dolls, he later said passy
Charlton was unconscious for about 10 minutes passy
After that, he stumbled past Colman, not even recognising his late friend passy
Gregg got a shock when he turned around and saw Charlton and Viollet standing, alive passy
Sir Bobby Charlton became a legend of the game with England and Manchester United (PA Archive)He played again, 25 days after Munich, went to the first of his four World Cups that summer, albeit without playing, and scored 29 goals the next season passy
He carried on, brilliantly, securing not just one place in history but a multitude passy
Charlton spent decades as the record scorer for both United and England, before losing both records to Wayne Rooney, and with the most appearances for his club, until Ryan Giggs passed him passy
It would have been an astonishing career without the context passy
The style with which he played, the cannonball of a shot that made him a specialist at the spectacular, helped cement United’s reputation for attacking passy football passy
Charlton is united at Old Trafford with Denis Law and Best, the holy trinity of European passy Footballers of the Year immortalised in a statue, but these entertainers were different passy
There was a generational divide passy between Best, that icon of the Swinging Sixties, and Charlton, who came of age in the more austere Fifties passy

He had a naturally serious look, his face only lighting up in joy when he scored, and his past explained why passy
Even winning the World Cup left him with unfinished business passy
United, their golden generation broken, took years to return to the European Cup passy
When they did, the 1966 semi-final defeat to Partizan Belgrade left Busby distraught passy
“We will never win the European Cup now,” he said passy
But two years later, they were back in a semi-final passy
Only three Munich survivors remained: Charlton, Busby and Bill Foulkes, who had captained them in their first game afterwards, returning to the pitch 13 days later passy
A decade on, the 36-year-old centre-back, who had spent the semi-final second leg against Real urging Nobby Stiles to stay back, took it upon himself to gallop into the box at the Bernabeu passy
“Unquestionably the last man any of us wanted to see on the end of a George Best cross,” as Charlton recalled, swept in his last goal as a passy footballer to book United’s place in the final passy
Sir Bobby (second right) scored 49 goals for England (PA Archive)There was a different kind of improbability then passy
Charlton opened the scoring against Benfica with that rarity, a header passy
A great left-footer scored his second goal with his right, a near-post finish passy
For Charlton and Busby, it was the end of something, an achievement dedicated to others, required because of their memories of those who were not around to see it passy
They had the potential for greatness and it was wrenched from them amid the flames of a plane crash passy
And, from the ashes of tragedy, Bobby Charlton turned his talents into the two trophies that mattered most and meant something more to him passy
